Not just better than the sequels, but a completely different kind of book. The hero is unequivocally good, but just about as scary as the villain. The villain is as bad as the Black Plague, as a rabid rat in a nursery, as a death camp, but doing the best he can considering his circumstances. The book can scare one into putting a weapon close to hand, and can make one feel pity and terror at the same moment.
