This inspired by a true story family saga should be an epic tear jerker but somehow spared viewers most of the sad drama when the film began with a calamity that abruptly turned a man to be a lonely widow to raise a preteen granddaughter from a deadbeat dad and diseased teen mom... While billed as “Cramer vs Cramer” with racial undertone, it was a heartwarming social drama that worked under the film’s special set of parameters in bridging the racial divide through the wisdom of the helpless little girl’s maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. Super performances by Costner as the emotionally complex grandpa and Jillian Estell as the little big girl.
