Dinner With Lenny

the Last Long Interview With Leonard Bernstein

In 1989 Cott conducted a 12 hour interview of Bernstein for Rolling Stone. It turned out to be the last before his death 11 months later. This book of 165 pages provides a complete account of Cott's questions & Lenny's answers - and he doesn't hold back any provocative statements, which at times are laced with expletives. As Cott states in the prelude; "Unlike almost any other classical performer of recent times, Leonard Bernstein...refused to compartmentalize and separate his emotional, intellectual, political, erotic, and spiritual longings from musical experience,.." Both Cott and Bernstein greatly admired Glenn Gould so the conversation naturally turned to him. As a Gould devotee, I enjoyed the loving tribute they paid him.
