This is one of the books from my childhood that I re-read from time to time because it made such an impression on me. Even though the novel is set in Puritan times it has some important messages about the various kinds of treatment of people who are 'different' that are still relevant. The narrative moves quickly and there are no jarring non-period elements that breaks the willing suspension of disbelief.
