The title seems to have two simultaneous meanings. For the civil rights minister, it means his church. For the son, it means his biological father’s house. Gaines, having lived for over 80 years in deeply racist Louisiana, is an expert in race relations and explores the feelings of various African-Americans about white racism and their opinions as to whether America will ever treat them fairly. The novel also explores whether the African-Americans should be satisfied with the concessions given by the whites or whether they should push further for even more equal treatment. Having been personally involved in the Civil Rights movement (although in the North), I can attest that the description of characters’ feelings, opinions, and activities are typical of what was going on.
