Director Arthur Penn got the freedom to make Mickey One (played by Warren Beatty) without any interference whatsoever from the financiers of the film except that it had to meet a budget of one million dollars. Some consider it Penn’s homage to the genre of the French New Wave. Elsewhere it has been asserted that it’s a remembrance of the widespread Kafkaesque paranoid fever engendered by the McCarthy and Hollywood Blacklist era. Penn and Beatty were some of the best Hollywood artists of the 20th century. For film aficionados this is 4 stars, for the uninitiated 2 stars.
