This, the first book in the long-running Spenser series, was my introduction to Robert B. Parker’s work, and I found it to be a fun and easy read. Perhaps a bit over confident, private detective Spenser nonetheless has the right combination of machismo, humor, and luck to weasel himself into and out of some sticky situations and get answers. He’s smart with a rough-edged style that makes him persuasive, and it seems to be a recipe for attracting the ladies, too! At times the storyline was a bit far-fetched but still entertaining. Written and set in the 1970s, this mystery is still relevant to today’s readers, and it’s definitely worth a try.
