F for classic mythology, but A for soap-opera value. At first I was horrified with this series for bastardizing Britian’s great cycle of Arthurian myths, diminishing its classic tales and noble themes to petty human schemes, scrapes, and foibles, and letting Merlin upstage King Arthur as the far stronger, sexier, more complex figure. But after watching the series for a while, I ended up thoroughly enjoying it for what it is: a trashy, sensational, entertaining, suspense-filled, medieval-costumed potboiler. Despite the bad press it received, fans of soap operas especially should give it a chance.
