the Dark Is Rising

People who have not read The Dark Is Rising Sequence may rate this movie higher. I love the books and the movie disregards everything except the basic plot synopsis and some of the characters. The Good: The cinematography was pretty good and I liked the costumes. Some of the characters were well cast. The Bad: The plot, setting, characters and motives are largely different from the book. We aren't even told what the signs are made of in the movie. I know the books well and I could barely follow the movie. The dialogue was wooden and forced trying to relate to today's kids. There is no mention of Susan Cooper's prophecies that lend to the books' magical appeal. Also, I have to say, I loved Ian McShane in "The Pillars of the Earth" but I felt he was miscast as Merriman. If you really want to experience a mythical, magical battle between Light and Dark through time with unforgettable characters and ethereal settings, be sure to look for the award-winning books by Susan Cooper. I've thoroughly enjoyed them as a youth and an adult. The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Over Sea, Under Stone The Dark Is Rising Greenwitch The Grey King Silver on the Tree
