While visiting a club one evening with her friend Simon, Clary witnesses something she shouldn't, but even more disturbingly, something no one else present appeared to have been able to see: several peculiar-looking teenagers murdering an otherworldly being who, upon death, vanishes into thin air. A few days later her mother disappears, and Clary herself is attacked by a ghastly creature in her own home. Suddenly, Jace, one of the teens from the club, comes to her aid and whisks her away to the "Institute," where she learns more about what happened to her mother, and who these mysterious, demon-murdering people are. This series was very popular at the library a few years ago, and so I'd been curious about it for some time. However, I'd until now hesitated to pick up the first book because of the expected commitment (there are 6, all 400+ pages!). From a teen readers' advisory perspective I'm glad I read this first installment, but at the same time I don't feel any desire to continue the series due to a few too many fantasy and relationship tropes that I've seen so many times before. Teens would probably eat this up, but I'm afraid I'm a few decades too late.
