Guilt can be crippling, and divine vengeance arrives in a convenient family pack in Yorgos Lanthimos’ brilliantly profane retelling of Artemis and Agamemnon set in contemporary bourgeois Cincinnati. Mixing elements of horror, the supernatural, and a hefty dose of Old Testament retribution (by way of Classical mythology) Lanthimos ice cold approach delivers as many laughs as it does shudders—and does so with consummate skill. His signature technique of having actors mouth their lines in a passive monotone, relying instead on jarring music and almost surreal visuals for emotional cues, gives the impression of an ancient Greek tragedy with a bit of kinky sex and absurdist humour thrown in for diversion. It all ends in the same flamboyant manner as it began leaving you to wonder whether you should laugh out loud or gape in disbelief. Euripides would probably be rolling in the aisle.

If you've seen a Lanthimos movie like The Lobster then you'll get the style of this film. It's not bad acting or slow pace, it's his signature style. With that said, it's disturbing and creepy, but makes you think. I'd recommend if you're into Lanthimos' style of directing, which doesn't tidy everything up in the end.... it certainly isn't a movie for everyone.

I think that everything is excellent such as acting, shooting, lighting etc. except the retribution is not reasonable enough. How did Martin (Barry Keoghan) predict the outcomes of retribution ? However, this movie is suspenseful and it is definitely worth to watch.

This movie is a real piece of trash. Worst waste of 2 hours ever! Don't bother- the story line is ridiculous, does not make a grain of sense, and all of the acting was terrible throughout.

I don't get it!
2 stars for just acting.

This film deserves no more than a one word review:

one of the worst movies ever...acting was deadpan, very confusing & scary music where it didnt belong..almost dreamlike scenarios that were absurd. skip this one.

Are our movies downwind of our culture or is are culture downwind of our movies? Who really knows? Regardless, I found this movie foreboding, menacing, sick, autistic and downright hilarious at moments. Kudos to Nicole Kidman's character for being the only non- aspergerish entity in this movie. Oddly (...or sadly) I found this movie to be a fitting portrayal of some but not all contemporary human interactions in 2018. I spent as much time watching the backgrounds in the city of Cincinnati as I did the characters. Still, I was entertained. It's like Harmony Korine's Gummo for sophisticates.

I get it! Euripides’s Iphigenia at Aulis is a timeless story, similar to the biblical tale of Abraham and Issac in its exploration of faith and sacrifice. Greek king Agamemnon accidentally kills a sacred deer that belonged to Artemis, goddess of childbirth. Because old-school Greek storytellers were all about the eye-for-an-eye style of justice, Artemis demands that Agamemnon sacrifices his daughter as penance. Colin Farrell has killed a young man's sacred being and must sacrifice to atone. But must we as viewer's be made to atone for our selection of this film with almost 2 hours of watching deadpan automatons deliver death sentences and murderous choices with the same degree of emotion with which they might deliver a pizza?? What a waste of Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell!! Cross this film off your list. Kristi & Abby Tabby

This film isn't for everyone; it can be hard to follow the somewhat confusing plot and character's actions and dialogue.

Based on "Iphigenia in Aulis", the acting is excellent yet the plot and the ending is rather bizarre. The story revolves around teen aged Martin who puts a mysterious curse on the Murphy family because an apparent mistake the Murphy patriarch, a surgeon, made earlier on Martin's father who died during surgery.

I found it worth watching though.
