I think that this book should not be for teens or adults though I am a teen myself I think this should be for more of 4-6th graders I say this because the righting was relatively easy to read but the story plot required more concentration then the average 6 year old. If you are a teen that is looking for books like this I suggest; The school for good and evil, Harry Potter, the mysterious Benedict Society and keeper of the lost Cities.

*spoiler alert*

I love the way the author hides the identity of the caricature Jax and makes him a royal I was NOT expecting that. I also love the plot and how Gilly has many siblings and a father who is not her biggest fan altho I do think that (don't want to sound dark) but if her mother had maybe not been alive it would have added more to Gilly's personal life. Also there is no competition but I am routing for you Jilly!!!!! (Jax & gilly)

This book was highly recommended to me by a friend. The storyline managed to keep me reading, but the writing is often messy or unclear and, I'm sorry, but I just find Gilly to be such an unlikeable character! She's impertinent, whiny, and mean. However, by the last chapter things seem to take a turn for the better, so I might give the second book a try to see if things improve. Lastly, I'm not sure why this book is in the Young Adult section because it really reads like a kid's book. If you're into fairytale-inspired series, may I recommend Whatever After by Sarah Mlynowski (grades 2-6) or The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer (middle grade) for some way better stories. Those were just my thoughts on Flunked.

I first read this book in fifth grade and have read it time and time again! In Flunked, main character Gilly, formerly a thief is sent to the FTRS, the Fairy Tale Reform school, where even the most wicked have now become teachers. With a magical battle on the horizon, Gilly must reevaluate just how good these “formerly” wicked villains are. This is one of my favorite books and I would recommend it to anyone who likes fairytale twists, similar to the Land of Stories, the Whatever After books, or the Twisted Tale series.

I really liked this!! It was the first book I read from this author and I loved it sooo much. I like that Gilly is strong and independent and she can do anything her heart tells her to do.

This was a fun and harmless take on fair tales. I would recommend this book for fantasy lovers in grades 3-8.

Fun, adventurous and unique. In this j fiction novel Cinderella is in charge of the fairytale world and her (supposedly) no-longer evil step -mother is running a reform school for troubled youth.
Gilly, the oldest daughter of the old woman that lives in a shoe has been thieving small items to help her family get by. They fell in hard times after Cinderella took the booming glass-slipper business away from her Family. Unfortunately, Gilly gets caught stealing one too many times and ends up doing 3 months in Fairytale Reform school. THAT is where the fun begins!

I thought this was a pretty good book for the fairy tale princesses and villains after the fact story. Instead of having a well known fairy tale character as the main character, the author has somebody else as the main character. The book moved a little slow at first but then it got better as I read on. It has great twists at the end about who is behind the crimes and who is trying to sabotage the school made by ex- villains to turn crime offenders into heroes, but not is all as it seems and the main character and her friends go on a mystery adventure to get to the bottom of it. Full of adventure, mystery, action, heroes and villains. Not everybody is who they seem to be.

Flunked, written by Jen Calonita, follows the journey of Gilly, a twelve year old girl with a quite mischievous personality, but every thief has a story and Gilly is no exception. Living in a kingdom where fairy tale stories are the past, present and future, Gilly is a character found in a poor situation, where she struggles to support her family. Especially when she gets caught stealing! Gilly is sent to Fairy Tale Reform School, which is run ironically by reformed villains, including the Evil Stepmother, the Big Bad Wolf and many more. However, with certain evil activities occurring around the school, Gilly is doubting whether or not these past villains have actually let go of their evil pasts. Follow Gilly’s journey through twisting turns as she questions who she can really trust in a school filled with mischievous students and potential villainous teachers. Overall, this novel is more targeted towards anyone 10 years old and older. I would give this novel a 4/5 stars. The second novel following Flunked, is Charmed.

Gillian Cobbler lives in Enchantasia with her parents and five siblings in an old boot. Gilly’s father is a shoemaker and it is very hard to provide for such a large family with his wages. Gilly takes it on herself to help the family out, but her way of helping is stealing things from royalty. She seems to be pretty good at it until she gets caught. She is sentenced to three months (or however long it takes to reform her) at Fairy Tale Reform School.
