This had the potential to be a really good book - finally, we were going to get the backstory on the death of Cross's wife, Maria, and finally, Cross was going to meet (and take down) the man who killed her.
Unfortunately, while these things do happen, the storytelling itself is lackluster. Cross leaves the FBI, and returns to his psychiatric practice, so there's not as much of the exciting action that we've seen in some of his other books. The serial killer in this volume (every Alex Cross book has at least one), the Butcher, is somewhat interesting, but not as interesting as some of the killers in the other books. We do get more of Cross's family life than usual, which is nice, but once again, Patterson brings up a potential love interest for Alex, only to take it away (as usual) toward the end of the book.
I did like the fact that we got to see more of John Sampson, and that he wasn't just trotted out to be Cross's sidekick when it was convenient. One of my biggest pet peeves in the books where Cross is on the DC police force, is that Sampson, his partner, is only involved in the action on a very limited basis.

Really like all of James Patterson's adult books. The movie CROSS with Tyler Perry playing Alex Cross was great-if you are a fan of these books, you should go see the movie. The critics got it WRONG on this on!!!

The Alex Cross series is a great one. I've read pretty much all of them and i have found each one to me just as interesting and as entertaining as the one before.
i am looking forward to the movie "I Alex Cross".

My first James Patterson book after listening to the Postcard Killers. A decent read. Will look for the rest of the Cross novels.

Interesting feedback. It was, of the entire series, my least favorite, though I've not read anything at all by James Patterson I did not like yet. There were some good twists in this one, and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

The kids are growing and Nana's getting older. Then again so is Alex Cross (and the rest of us). In Patterson's 12th Cross novel, Alex makes another career move, hanging out his psychologist's shingle. But he can't sit still; a series of brutal rapes and murders puts Cross (teamed with former partner John Sampson) on the trail of a former hit man turned serial killer. Through a connection with his wife Marie's death, we learn more about Cross' past and about his wife. Another fast-paced, exciting book from James Patterson.
