A family is given a puppy for a year so that he can be housebroken and taught basic behavioral commands. After that year, the dog will be put into training as a helper dog for the disabled. A young daughter soon bonds with the puppy and the dog in turn becomes her constant companion. When the year is over the girl is heartbroken at the prospect of losing her best friend, but learns that the dog could be the best hope for the better life for a man with paralysis.
