This is probably the best lukasevansherman review out there. The information and formatting are both mostly correct and kind of informed. High note: the unlikely l in "Rimbaud"
Dum Dum Girls emerged in 2010 with "I Will Be" and from the get go there was nothing original about them. It started off as a solo project of Dee Dee, who shares her stage name with the world's most famous punk rock bassist, and the band name references both Iggy Pop and the Vaselines. Their sound was garage pop meets girl group with a health dose of Jesus & Mary Chain fuzz. They were cool, they were stylish (bandmembers usually dress all in black), they knew their music history, but are they any good? On their third album (although it's just Dee Dee with help from fellow revivalist Sune Rose Wagner of the Raveonettes), the answer seems to be "not really." The sound is more goth-y and atmospheric, sounding a lot like vintage Siouxsie and the Banshees, among other arts 80s British bands. A line from "Evil Blooms," "Why be good? Be beautiful and sad" could be a mission statement. Song titles like "Trouble is My Name" and "Little Minx" flirt with darkness, but the album is as safe as milk and about as interesting. Also, she mispronounces Rimbauld (sounds like Rambo). Dee Dee is married to a dude from another derivative band, Crocodiles, and they put out an album as Haunted Hearts.
Wow! I've been listing these 2014 releases in order of my preference and now that I'm coming close to the top, I'm finding that my choices are NOT shared by others. (Another 5 star to 2 star ratio). No matter. Our reaction to music is always personal.
Yes, I found The Dum Dum Girls version of "noise pop/lo fi indie pop to be quite appealing. Favorites include: "Rimbaud Eyes", "In the Wake of You", "Lost Boys and Girls Club" and "Little Minx".
This is a beautiful album. The band's performances at Bowery Ballroom on March 25, 2014, and, Music Hall of
Williamsburg on March 26, 2014 were most enjoyable.
