This book was amazing!! Kate Breslin has a brilliant style of writing. You can pick up any of her books and they will be your favorite. This book was so powerful, it had me soaring one chapter and crying another. The main characters are wonderful. I really liked seeing Aric change, you could see how hard it was for him to accept that what he had believed in and fought for was wrong. The lessons they both learn change them into better people. And the way they saved the Jews, was thrilling. The book progressed so nicely and everything happened at just the right moment. The translation/explanation of words at the end was a nice touch that really helped. I rate it 5 out of 5. Definitely recommend this book.

This was similar to the Queen Esther story in the bible and it is a modern day re-telling of it in a way.
So your probably thinking that since its a Queen Esther story that the commandant is going to turn out to be good, and save everyone. Wrong, yes he does save some people at the risk of his own life, but he let so many others die for so long even though he knew it was wrong. He only started helping protect people once Hadassah was bring it to his attention and saying hey this isn't okay.

Overall was a disappointing read with a few bright spots that made me not completely hate it.

The sole purpose of this book seems to be to convert Jews to Christianity.
