Alma DeGeer Dunahew, the mother of three young boys, works as the maid for a prominent citizen and his family in West Table, Missouri. Her husband is mostly absent, and, in 1929, her scandalous, beloved younger sister is one of the 42 killed in an explosion at the local dance hall. Who is to blame? Mobsters from St. Louis? The embittered local gypsies? The preacher who railed against the loose morals of the waltzing couples? Or could it have been a colossal accident?

Not what I expected. I thought this would be a fast read, but it was not. Probably a book better read in large sittings rather than small chunks. I think all the tidbits and characters would fit together better in my head if I had been able to read continuously.

I was a little let down by the revelation at the end. What that's it? It was good to see how all the pieces fit together to create the circumstances of the night about which the whole book centers. Again, a more continuous reading would be more satisfying.
