"It's a city built upwards, not across--where streets are built upon streets, buildings upon buildings. A city that the Ministry rules from the sunlit summit, and where the forsaken lurk in the darkness of Under. Rojan Dizon doesn't mind staying in the shadows, because he's got things to hide. Things like being a pain-mage, with the forbidden power to draw magic from pain. But he can't hide for ever. Because when Rojan stumbles upon the secrets lurking in the depths of the Pit, the fate of Mahala will depend on him using his magic. And unlucky for Rojan--this is going to hurt."-- P. [4] of cover.

The writing isn't spectacular, and the protagonist is hard to like at times, but on the whole I enjoyed this and will be picking up the next book. The world-building is well done, and I'm curious to see where Knight goes with this series.

Nice dystopian premise and a hard-as-nails anti-hero.
Unfortunately, the last section was wordy filler. Like listening to a drunken windbag moaning about life, the universe and everything.

An eerie adult Dystopia where magic meets reality--and where pain is the currency of those in power.

A really interesting trilogy, from which this is book 1. I stumbled on it just to kill some time while waiting for another book to become available.
Easy to read and full of twists and unexpected turns. If you are a fan for Fantasy/Fiction (SPOILER - magic), as I am, I hope you'll love it as much as I did. When I started on book 1 of 3 I completely forgot that this was only supposed to be time-filler. So, until I've finished the trilogy, I couldn't think of picking up another book!

Well written and well conceived new world. Am glad to have picked it up.
