Loved this book. Dr. Hawa reaches into the darkest memories of her past to share stories that need to be heard. Her strong character is unquestionable, and her boldness to write this book forces the reader to come to grips with the depth of evil that exists in this world. Said evil requires all people to lay aside our desire to be right and powerful to extend compassion and love in order to establish peace. I sincerely hope that her efforts will help a peaceful, stable Somalia to be established in her lifetime so that she can again experience the joy of her homeland. This book caused me to personally consider how I respond to oppression, and to seek to be a part of solutions rather than fueling problems.

Hawa Abdi is a doctor, a lawyer, a humanitarian and a Somali woman who has spent her life providing care for her Somali brothers and sisters, regardless of what clan they belong to. She has spent more than 20 years working for a whole country in which clans don't fight with each other. Her story is amazing and simple. She does what she does because she must; she can't bear to allow others to suffer in health, in hunger, and so she helps in whatever ways she can. This is the story of an extraordinary woman who is still keeping hope alive.
