This series is sincerely adorable. These books remind me a lot of both Gail Carson Levine and Shannon Hale (two of my absolute favorites), but without some of the emotional depth and wisdom of those books – which isn't necessarily a dig, as these feel like they’re written for a slightly younger audience. Was this sequel quite as good as the original? No, simply because it lacked book one’s novelty. However, those who enjoyed the first installment will undoubtedly love this – it’s the perfect sort of read for fantasy fans who might be too little for something overly heavy.

I liked that the book's plot was made deeper and more high-stakes than in the first book, but I really want to know more about the characters. And villains don't need to be so black-and-white.
