I adore the concept of dragons and stories about them aren’t so common as I would like. This novel of one girl’s unwitting involvement with them due to a daffy aunt, two princes, a spoiled princess and a scheming servant girl is one of the best I’ve ever read about them. It brims with humor, anxiety and the unexpected. The dragons here don’t necessarily kill. They’re shy and wary of human beings, they don’t hoard gold and they turn out to be quirky, weird and occasionally funny individuals. They are not beings to be held in contempt, however, and the story turns deadly serious in the blink of an eye when it reminds us of that.

The heroine is a mere country girl but one with her head firmly on her shoulders and a plan about what she’s going to do with her life. Creel is smart, funny, talented, feisty and persistent. She felt like a best friend by the time I’d finished this book, one I was reluctant to part with as she started her new existence as a store owner and seamstress. While the ending almost promises a sequel (yes!), I was happy to see her get what she wanted out of life. This book is more than enough for anyone who likes their preconceived ideas about otherworldly creatures turned on their heads.

This was a great book. I love how it starts out, the fantasy is so light and sweet. I'd recommend for ages 9-13

This book is fantastic!! I really loved the main character and her no-nonsense approach to her life, just doing what needed to be done and not looking back. The dragons are absolutely wonderful. It's really good, check it out.

I read this the first time around when I was maybe 9 or 10, and I adored it. It was my favorite for a time (it's still one of my favorites). It's really sweet. It is definitely a book for people with feminine interests and likings, however the age when you read this doesn't matter. It's one of those books where anyone can read it.

Great book (and series) for young kids as a story for bedtime. Also great for young readers looking to push beyond basic chapter books.

When an orphan girl named Creel befriends a dragon, she unknowingly inherits a pair of slippers that could be used to save her kingdom, or destroy it.

"She wanted dragon gold. She got a pair of shoes.

Many stories tell of damsels in distress, who are rescued from the clutches of fire-breathing dragons by knights in shining armor, and swept off to live happily ever after.

This is not one of those stories.

True, when Creel’s aunt suggests sacrificing her to the local dragon, it is with the hope that the knight will marry Creel and that everyone (aunt and family included) will benefit handsomely. Yet it’s Creel who talks her way out of the dragon’s clutches. And it’s Creel who walks for days on end to seek her fortune in the king’s city with only a bit of embroidery thread and a strange pair of slippers in her possession.

But even Creel could not have guessed the outcome of this tale. For in a country on the verge of war, Creel unknowingly possesses not just any pair of shoes, but a tool that could be used to save her kingdom…or destroy it." (Summary from www.jessicadaygeorge.com)

I had been struggling to get published for nine years, and now I had been rejected 187 times and had a baby who cried from exhaustion all night but wouldn't sleep! One night, very tired, my husband and I decided that I would take a break from writing for a while, and just focus on our son and trying to get him to sleep. And eat. And stop crying. So of course he went to bed that night without any fuss. And of course, right as I was shutting down my laptop for the night, the entire story of Dragon Slippers just downloaded into my brain! I knew every line, every name, every dragon and what they hoarded. It was beautiful. It was magical. And it hasn't happened since! - Jessica day George

Clever, well-plotted and good fun. -Kirkus Reviews

[T]he fairy-tale action and vivid scenes, from glittering dragon cave to posh dress shop, are captivating, and readers will easily connect with brave Creel, who weathers betrayals and learns to value true friends and her own talents. -Booklist
