A fantastic series for mystery lovers! It's based on the novels by Ann Cleeves about the lonely, work-obsessed, disheveled Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. Vera barks at and bosses around her team - especially her detective sergeant, Joe , but we grow to like her despite her brusque manner. Set in gorgeous Northumberland England, you'll revel in the bucolic scenery and admire the great skill of the award-winning lead actress, Brenda Blethyn. Murders are gritty, writing is good. It's gone on seven seasons as of 2017, so you know it's worth a look!

For sure I love this series. Vera is such an engaging character. I'm sure that I've seen all the episodes ever made. May we have more, please?

My favourite Police detective, by far.
If only, they were all this good.

Highly recommended. She is truly a diamond in the rough.

Much in the tradition of a grumpy Morse, this is delightful English Detective fiction with super scenery.

good murder mystery series, but i tend to like the ones where the detective is a little more light-hearted - like Columbo, Murder She Wrote, or Father Brown. Vera is a good show - just a little dark for me. She's pretty rough around the edges, too, which of course makes her more interesting to some viewers.

charming protagonist with complex psychological tensions. Needed the subtitles for some of that English country dialogue

The committed Vera and her side kick Joe. Good shows worth your time.

I love Vera. She is not young, nor pretty, nor skinny, nor stylish. What she is, is a older woman with a long successful career, a damaged childhood, and a young (eye candy) apprentice to train--both in police work and in not ruining his life as she has hers. She is cranky, mulish, and standoffish; however, she is a great detective and mentor. The series is a little bit of work to follow (I need subtitles) but the characters are strong, the scenic background fascinating, and ,for me, the change from US and Swedish crime to British crime is nice.

It takes a bit to get a a handle on the language, pet, but it is worth it. Great who-dunnit drama.
