Georgie is known for two things: she’s a sharp shooter with a sharp tongue. She is also intelligent, brave, caring, and passionate about her family and the store they run. When her sister, Agatha, runs away and a mutilated body wearing Agatha’s dress is brought home a few weeks later by the town sheriff, the rest of her small family mourns and buries the body. Only Georgie refuses to accept the worst. She schemes and bribes to get a horse (she ends up with a stubborn mule) and sets off to find her sister, or failing that, find out what happened to her. This is a funny, poignant and terrific adventure story – believable, engaging, and a great read.

Not sure how to give this 5 stars, but I would. This is jam-packed with action and grit, and heart. A fantastic historical novel set in Wisconsin in 1871. I thought it got a tiny bit preachy at the very end, but I still rank it as fantastic.

Set in the 1870's Wisconsin, Georgie's beloved older sister Agatha has run away. Several days later, the town's sheriff arrives back in town with the body of a young lady that everyone assumes is Agatha, and a murder is suspected. Georgie has other ideas, and sets off to find out what happened to her sister, whom she refuses to believe is dead, despite the grisly evidence. A mystery, adventure and coming-of-age tale all in one, Georgie's story will win readers' hearts.

Georgie’s sister Agatha is dead. That’s what everyone thinks anyway. Except Georgie. But when she heads out into the 1871 wilderness of Wisconsin with her trusty gun, the truth may turn out to be a whole lot more complicated than she ever dreamed.

I loved Timberlake's 'That Girl Lucy Moon' (which I believe is out of print...too bad). This one didn't grab me as strongly. The conclusion and tying-up-of-ends were really long and drawn out.

Great book!! It kept me guessing and gasping the whole way through!!

ELIZABETH RAMSEY BIRD Feb 11, 2013

Agatha is dead, to begin with. Or is she? When the sheriff came home with a body in a ball gown with its features blown all to smithereens (or eaten by wild animals) everyone in Placid, Wisconsin believes that it's Georgie’s older sister. The one that ran off after Georgie helped to spoil her engagement. Georgie, for the record, doesn’t believe a word of it and she’s going to find the truth. As far as she's concerned Agatha just has to be alive somewhere, so with a local boy, a mule, some gold coins sewn into her hems, and a gun she can rely on, Georgie sets off to prove her theory. Trouble is, the truth ends up being a whole lot more complicated than she ever could have suspected.
