Um... what? My expectations for Walking the Amazon were out of sync with how Stafford presents it. What I thought was going to be a transformative and deeply personal journey for the author instead focused on petty bickering with his short-lived partner and other trivial mentions of the hike. No thanks. Ed Stafford may have had the mental and physical fortitude to complete his goal of walking the Amazon River, but that doesn't automatically translate into something meaningful to write about.

Loved the book! It's not only an amazing achievement, but a great narrative: a rare glimpse into a mind of a tough guy. There are too many books written sugar-coating great achievements and experiences... with this book the reader feels like s/he is really there with Ed. The ways he goes about stuff is like it really happens in most any adventure - a little bit of glory, and a lot of doubts, mistakes, questions more common than answers, etc. Some reviewers were baffled by Ed's introspective writing - those must have been people who don't venture far from well traveled pathways. Highly recommended.
