Set on the island of Murano, near Venice, this quick but tightly written novel follows a family of glass makers who have fallen on hard times.

Giovanna is beautiful, wants to wed a nobleman, and has the courtly graces to match her ambition. Maria, Giovanna's younger sister, is always a tad unkempt, makes beautiful drawings, and desperately wants to continue working in her family's glass forge. Unfortunately, it is Maria, not Giovanna, who their father has decreed will be the one to marry into nobility. Their father flaunts tradition in his will to ensure that his muse, the youngest daughter, will be rewarded for inspiring the innovative glass-making technique that founded the family's fortune. Yet it is Giovanna who would be the best fit for an aristocratic lifestyle, while Maria is happiest when being industrious. Can the young women find a way to honor their father's memory yet still stay true to themselves and their desires?

The love lives of Giovanna and Maria become entangled and resolved in a manner reminiscent of a Shakespearean comedy. And indeed, all's well that ends well in this light, enjoyable tale. While the discussions of love, marriage, and duty may appeal more to teens, the innocence of the story makes it accessible to a much younger audience.
