The horse Susan Richards chose for rescue wouldn’t be corralled into her waiting trailer. Instead Lay Me Down, a former racehorse with a foal close on her heels, walked right up that ramp and into Susan’s life. This gentle creaturemalnourished, plagued by pneumonia and an eye infectionhad endured a rough road, but somehow her heart was still open and generous. It seemed fated that she would come into Susan’s paddock and teach her how to embrace the joys of life despite the dangers of living.

An elegant and often heartbreaking tale filled with animal characters as complicated and lively as their human counterparts, this is an inspiring story of courage and hope and the ways in which all loveeven an animal’shas the power to heal.

this book is my favorite book no doubt. Susan describes how loss and pain can make someone change someone and make them who they are. it also shows that love from someone can also change you. the story of Susan and Lay me down is truly a remarkable story that can change peoples perspectives on others, especially peoples perspectives of horses and animals

I did not think I would like this book as I usually do not read memoirs. But I must say, this is an excellent book about self-realizations and life. You will laugh, cry, get angry, and become entwined with both horse and owner. Truly worth the read.

You don't have to own a horse to appreciate the real life experiences shared in this book. If you have ever loved a pet, you will understand the wide range of emotions such a bond creates in an individual's life. You will laugh and you will cry.

“They say you can't escape your past, but I don't believe that. I believe you escape it every day, over and over again, always cognizant of the difference between past and present”
