Inge is a feisty German mail-order bride who has come to Minnesota to marry Olaf, a young Norwegian immigrant farmer of few words. But in a post-WWI, anti-German climate, the local minister openly forbids the marriage. Inge and Olaf fall in love despite the town's disapproval. But when the town banker attempts to foreclose on the farm of his friend Frandsen, Olaf takes a stand.

I love this film. It is beautiful in every way. The two lead actors are excellent. It is slow moving, but I think it's the perfect pace for telling this story. It is a very Minnesotan movie; it takes place and was filmed here, the director/writer is from here, and it was based on a short story by a Minnesota author ("A Gravestone Made of Wheat" by Will Weaver, from the short story collection of the same title as well as the Sweet Land: New and Selected Stories collection). The movie is rated PG for brief partial nudity and mild language.

Interesting story about the difficulties our ancestors had to endure when coming to America. A bit too long. Was neat to see the old cars, tractor and thrashing machine. Good to see Ned Beatty again. Some of the special features very interesting on the making of the movie. Cars were loaned by collectors at no charge.

This is independent cinema with a story about a mail-order bride landing in a farm in post-WW1 America. Slow and unpretentious, it is a love story that some will find lacking in excitement.

Ja. Hubby's grandma was a mail order bride so this held special interest for us. I speak German so trust me when I tell you not to bother trying to figure out what the gal rants about in the church. It's likely she rehearsed the lines for speedy delivery without the diction for better effect. The actors are all very engaging and you find yourself rooting for them to win over the odds. It was a good depiction of that time period. Alan Cumming and Alex (?) were terrific and really appeared to have enjoyed being a part of this lovely indie film. Date movie? Yes.
