The group had been away from the abbey on a short pilgrimage - the abbess's body was found later on the trail but there was no sign of her companions or their fates. Complicating the situation, the murdered abbess is the niece of Conri, warlord of the Ui Fidgente. Fidelma, whose investigative skills are requested by Conri, is sent by her brother the king in hopes that she can bring a quick resolution to this tragedy. But when Sister Fidelma and her husband, Brother Eadulf, arrive they find that there has been another violent murder under mysterious circumstances. One of the senior scholars of the abbey has been found bludgeoned to death in the oratory.
With two murders now on her hands, Fidelma is also confronted with the further mysteries of a trade ship lured to its doom on the rocky western shore of Ireland and the rumored figure of "The Master of Souls," a mysterious rabble-rouser roaming the nearby countryside wrecking havoc and raising rebellion. How they are related - if indeed they are - and what deadly hand is behind these crimes combine in one of the most perplexing mysteries ever faced by the redoubtable Fidelma.
