There's a lot of deep truth in this deceptively simple family drama, and the three hour running time flies by. There's just so much heart in this and so much care put into the characters, and director Edward Yang makes it all feel so effortless.

A critical, if not a commercial, hit (I mean, don't American audiences love 3 hour Taiwanese films?) when it came out in 2000, Edward Yang's "Yi Yi" was recently on the New York Times' list of the best 25 films of the 21st century. It is long and slow-moving, but it's also an absorbing and intimate look at a group of family and friends navigating everyday life in Taipei. If you can commit, it's ultimately rewarding. This was an early release from the Criterion Collection.
"The Chinese title of the film is 'Yi Yi,' which literally translate to 'one-one,' and 'one-one' means 'individually' in Chinese."-Edward Yang

Superficially a rather mundane film, but when looked at with patience it is profundity simply expressed; makes everyday living reveal its power.

I really loved this movie by Yang. It's the type of movie you rarely see coming out of Hollywood. Apparently, Taiwanese is dead now which is unfortunate because I'd love to see more movies from Edward. Touching, funny, poignant and memorable film. Highly recommended.

This is a beautiful, contemplative film about the small decisions you make that end up determining your life. Very well acted and directed.

My friend and I only lasted 90' through this mildly interesting 3-hour saga of disfunctional Taiwan families. Why is this film in the Criterion Collection? The performances are strong, but the dialogue is hard for this English speaker to follow, and untangling the plot and characters just doesn't seem worth the trouble.
