From first-time novelist Jordan Sonnenblick, a brave and beautiful story that will make readers laugh and break their hearts at the same time.Thirteen-year-old Steven has a totally normal life: he plays drums in the All-Star Jazz band, has a crush on the hottest girl in the school, and is constantly annoyed by his five-year-old brother, Jeffrey. But when Jeffrey is diagnosed with leukemia, Steven's world is turned upside down. He is forced to deal with his brother's illness and his parents' attempts to keep the family in one piece. Salted with humor and peppered with devastating realities, DRUMS, GIRLS, AND DANGEROUS PIE is a heartwarming journey through a year in the life of a family in crisis.

Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for this book. When my good friend lent it to me, saying it was amazing, I doubted her. But this book was very good. Of course it wasn't The Fault in Our Stars cancer-book-level good, but it was still very good. The way it focused around being the sibling of a cancer patient instead of the cancer patient yourself was a very good choice. But the part that I thought was the absolute best, was the author's note. The story about this girl, Emily, that Jorden Sonnenblick taught was overwhelming. It would have been more so if the book was directly about her situation, but Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie had that affect instead. The only thing that was disappointing to me was that Jordon thought that Dangerous Pie was important enough to mention in the title, but it had such a small part in the actual book! It was just mentioned in the beginning, with Steven sometimes mentioning it (but actually talking about his drum sticks) throughout the book. But nevermind that, this book was very good and I recommend it. Read it. You won't regret it.

For anyone who read After Ever After, this is the book that came before it. It is written from Steven's point of view. (When he was in 8th grade and Jeffrey was 4)

Really good story. Steven's journals are good too.
My favourite quote:
"Renee was beautiful, but she was my friend now. On the other hand, Annette was my friend, but now she was beautiful."
