This is not a good movie and a waste of two great talents. I watched because i knew there would be some good music and there was. The storyline however is full of holes and Judy Dench character being in love with a young boy was very pathetic and somewhat tasteless.
The arrival of the boy on the shores of England was not explained, or followed up by authorities and could he has been so naive as to think he could get to America in a row boat?!

Decent enough time-killer. It's a straightforward story. Started at point A, went to point C via point B with no big mysteries along the way. Definitely for ladies I would think. What can go wrong with watching Judi Dench and Maggie Smith anyway?

It's a miss if: you don't give a fig about British history, literature, slower paced stories where you have to look deeper into the lives being portrayed, or world history (as in the world wars.)

Charles Dance wrote this & I have great admiration & respect for him. The first time I saw this it was for the scenery, the story & to watch the two most imminent actors. It did not fully dawn on me the subtle nuances of the lives of these sisters. Older sister (M.Smith) lost her very young husband in WWI, younger sister (the fantastic, Judi Dench) may have had a lost love, also lost to war. I surmise she was traumatised by events, stunted in emotional growth & dependent & protected by her older sister. How she must have longed for a fulfilled life, husband, children, which seems suggested in her curiosity & attachment to the young Polish man.

The young man was trying to escape Europe for America & the coming war. How he ends up in the care of these ladies is not fully explained. This is the age of slow recovery from WWI & the first signs of another approaching global war. Just my take on this film.

The story unfolds slowly. Opportunities come and pass. How to respond when the longing of a missed opportunity resurfaces or a passion can be realized?

I liked this DVD. It has a happy ending. The main characters are 2 aging elderly senior citizens. The script is strong. It is well acted. It is good for all ages. The story is slow moving. You may relate to the experience of the actors. I like Maggie Smith as an actress.

The fish pie made me gag. The movie is slow and boring.

This movie rubs up against many social mores within soft entertainment values. Elderly, secluded single women, two matrons and a servant, rescue a handsome, mysterious, needy lad. This scenario coupled with an older medical doctor pursuing a knock-out, wealthy lady artist while suspicious townspeople look on. Great views of an English seaside community.

The young love interest is cute as a button! I did not see anything to despise about the rich and beautiful woman who seemed to have a lot of idle time. This is a movie about fate but it is also a story about how Love and Pain are intertwined.

Great to watch these two major stars working together in a pleasant if somewhat implausible story. The scenery the music and the good feeling make up for the holes in the storyline.
