Arranged in three parts, this work opens with an Introduction that retraces the history of the Tithe Applotment Survey, and explains the author's research and presentation methods. Part I is a Full Name Index that includes over 12,600 tithe payers and links them one of 930 neighborhood-like townland locations. Part II is a Recapitulation of the Tithe Records arranged alphabetically by townland. It places each person in the context of his neighborhood population and doubles as a place name index to the map set. Standardized and obsolete place names are thoroughly cross-referenced and reconciled wherever possible. Part III consists of 3 maps of Longfords major land divisions, plus 27 Civil Parish Maps of its townlands in a unique pre-Ordnance Survey format.
This work has been lauded by historians and genealogists in Ireland and the U.S. Brian Donovan of Eneclann, Trinity College in Dublin, stated, "I am extremely impressed with the work Mr. Rymsza has undertaken." Heritage Quest Magazine asserted that it was "destined to be a standard in the field of Irish research." American Reference Books Annual declared it to be "recommended for all Irish genealogy collections." More reviewers' comments can be found at our web site

The British colonial administration conducted two tax surveys of Ireland during the 19th century, the Tithe Applotment Books shortly before and Griffith's Primary Valuation just after the Famine. A veteran in data manipulation who is interested in Irish genealogy, Rymsza indexes the more than 12,600 entries in the Books from that single county, providing surname, given name, townland, civil parish, and some information about the land being taxed for the Anglican Church. People are listed by surname, and again by townland. Maps are included. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
