The mystery was okay. The protagonist day to day fighting alcoholism & admitting he got a problem contributed to bittersweet payoff.

Lawrence Block has written one of the best murder mystery series that I have ever read. I have been reading him for more than 25 years, I try to read some of his books in this series every year. While this is not literature, it is excellent entertainment. There is so much crap out there so when one finds an entertaining, innovative, and dense story telling author I tend to read them again and again. Unfortunately the library has only an incomplete collection. Every book in the Mattew Scudder series is a little gem, if you enjoy murder mysteries and aren't looking for literature. I read to be entertained, and to avoid the crap that is on TV. Anyways, please try any of Matthew Scudder series (just look up Matthew Scudder on the net if you need a title), and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.

What a great book, more about a man's struggle with alcoholism than solving a murder mystery. I cannot remember a time when I was nearly moved to tears reading the last page of a book. Thank you Lawrence Block.
