I really like Greg Bear's work as it is typically bold and visionary, and this book does not disappoint in those terms. That being said, the premise here- a planet colonized by fanatics of all three major monotheistic religions familiar to we denizens of the 21st century- is a little weak in comparison to "Blood Music" or "Moving Mars". The author seems a little out of his comfort-zone extrapolating religious beliefs and scriptural disputations instead of futurist tech. Though the idea of sentient "cities" that reject their human citizens as unworthy sinners was intriguing, the story went in too many directions overall to provide much satisfaction.
