Although I wasn't impressed with the opening chapters and even considered cutting my losses after 25 pages or so, I'm very glad I decided to soldier on as the quality of the storytelling increased very quickly thereafter. If you like "hard" sci-fi in the vein of Arthur C. Clarke or even Ben Bova you should really get a lot out of this novel, which on the whole probably deserves to have won its recognition back in the 90s. Mr. Bear does a good job imagining a not-so-distant future of high technology and even higher human aspirations, then easing the reader into the narrative as glibly and seamlessly as Gibson did with Neuromancer. Quite a strong piece from Greg Bear, Moving Mars is a very different style novel than the others on this list. Essentially a cross of hard SF and fantasy, Moving Mars tells the story of a fascinating female protagonist, Casseia Majumdar and her progression through Martian society.
